about

Released under his Acharné moniker, “Innocence and Suburbia” is producer Rick Bull’s 7th album-release; a marked diversion from previous long-players under the decidedly techno-leaning Deepchild alias, and the first album to be released on the artists own Seppüku imprint.

After well over 20 years releasing techno / house material on labels as diverse as Trapez, Thoughtless Music, Leisure System, and more, Innocence and Suburbia reads as an unexpected exercise in reflexive hauntology – a smeared montage of memory and restless moments authored in transient (and often claustrophonic) spaces ‘in between’. Airports. Kitchen tables in London, India, Seattle. Locked bedrooms in Berlin.

Not so much a requiem for Berlin experience, but a radical pause to reflect on the shifting sands of a beloved city suddenly fetishised, marketed and ‘meme-ified’ in a way which demanded a step away by the artist almost over a year ago. An attempt to relinquish self-conscious production conventions and simply to write, without expectation.

In the artists own words:

“In early 2014, much of the fabric of my life in Berlin began to unravel. So many close friends began to leave the neighborhood - forced abroad by family issues or unemployment, whilst a decade long relationship with my partner came to an end. Shortly thereafter, so much felt like it began to systematically dissolve. I remember touching down in the city again after international shows, and it just felt….’different’. I played the wonderful Berghain / Panoramabar last in 2015 (as Concubine with Noah Pred) and felt both honored, elated and strangely disconnected afterwards – hovering 6 feet behind my body. Acharné became a way to try to metabolise this fragmentation.

It seemed like certain elements of the techno ‘scene’ were eating itself – at least in my little, beautiful corner of Neükuolln, and that I wasn’t equipped to process this experience adequately. When did this become a ‘scene’ at all? Where was I? Berlin has always urged me to go where I couldn’t quite be found. So I did.”

After 7 years based in Berlin, Innocence and Suburbia is very much a diary of fractured ‘fugitive pieces’ rather than a fully articulated thesis – a marked departure from the slick and functional Neukölln Burning album which preceded it (as ‘Deepchild’).

It marks the close of a 10-year long romantic relationship in Berlin, and the tender exploration of a new partnership forged in limelight of radical change – and a pause abroad in the markedly different world of suburban Sydney. It attempts to honor, in its own way, the space of ‘unknowing’, possibility, potential and courage which loss affords us all.
